Aamir Khan gave his fans a great gift in the form of PK. The movie was released on 19th December, 2014 and caused quite a stir in India and many other parts of the world. Let me warn you that this is not a film for narrow minded people.
Lately, we have seen Aamir Khan’s immense involvement in projects related to social issues which afflict the society. Starting from Rang Dy Basanti, which revolved around government corruption and moving on to various others such as Taray Zameen Par (creating awareness about dyslexia), 3 Idiots (focusing on the negative effects of educational society on students). Numerous people took Gajni lightly regarding it as pure entertainment. However, even in that movie Amir Khan have powerful messages such as trafficking of young girls and consequences faced by those who raise a voice (as people on official posts are also involved).
Film is not the only medium that Aamir Khan is using to create awareness about community issues. Satyamev Jayate, a television series, was aired for the first time on 6th May, 2012 when Aamir Khan arrived at the conclusion that TV is the best medium to reach the masses. After joining hands with his childhood friend Satyajit Bhatka, who is also the director of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir Khan ventured into Television to tackle issues such as Child abuse, Sexual Harassments, Child Labour, Corruption, Honour Killing etc. The motto of this show is to create awareness and give public the confidence to raise their voices and stand against injustice to bring change.
Coming back to PK, this film also makes one question various things that we accept as a part of our lives. Aamir Khan plays the role of an Alien and the film shows how creatures from outer world perceive us. He gets named PK as people kept referring to him as ‘Peekay hai’ as in drunk because he was raising questions which were a taboo and no man in his senses would dare ask. The main part that he highlighted was when God has created us alike then who are we to differentiate and if so then on what basis. He focused on how certain people are manipulating the masses in name of religion. Whether they are Hindu religious leaders taking money or so- called Islamic extremist brainwashing individual towards suicide bombing they all are immoral. PK highlights the double standards in the society where killers are walking freely and lovers are scared to come out in open. The film teaches us a lesson to question things instead of blindly following them in the name of religion.
PK is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, produced by Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma star the lead roles while Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt are in supporting roles. The Genre of the film is comedy-drama. Though highly criticized it still managed to be the highest grossing film in India.
Personally, PK is one of the best movies I have ever watched. It is extremely well researched and terrifically informative. It has condemned superstitions and tried opening the eyes of common men against how they are misled in name of religion for personal benefit of so called appointed religious ‘Managers’. This is also readily practiced in our society where we are divided in different sects from an early age which promotes hate. It is a must watch for everyone without getting offended as there is a lot to learn. Well Done Aamir Khan!
