There’s no denying how important oils are for your hair. Using oil to condition hair stems back to centuries, from our grandmothers and great grandmothers massaging any old oil onto our heads. Since we all want gorgeous, long, hydrated locks, we always tend to forget oiling our hair on a routine basis. Oiling is a great way to boost hydration - think of it as a deep conditioner. Used on a weekly basis, oil can improve your hair looking into looking shiny and silky soft.
The rule of thumb for your best hair ever is to use hair oil accordingly to your specific needs. All oils do wonders for the scalp and dried ends but if you want to lessen any hair problems stick to using one or mixing a few hair oils to create your own tonic.
To get your strands nourished and hydrated- there are a few ways to go about applying it.
Effective Hair Oiling Methods
- Hot Oil: Take your oil in a large microwavable bowl and heat it in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds. For an easier method- heat a pot of water for 5 minutes, take it off the stove and place your oil container into the water for 1 minute. The heated oil will penetrate and infuse hydration into any dryness on your scalp.
- Overnight: Recommended for really damaged hair. Apply your oil at night before going to bed, thoroughly comb your hair and wrap it with a scarf to leave it on overnight and wash off in the morning.
- Scalp Massage: Recommended for irritated scalp and hair loss. Take a few drops of hair oil and rub your palms together to evenly spread the oil than massage the scalp by gently running your fingers onto your scalp. This will help to absorb the oil into your hair follicle where new hair stats to grow.
From split ends to chemically treated hair, coconut oil can aid to stimulate the hair follicle to promote stronger hair growth. For centuries it’s been used to treat any hair problems including dandruff. Coconut oil is the best oil to easily absorb into hair strands compared to others, leading to intense moisture and stronger hair.
For thick, coarse hair- olive oil works wonders to alleviate dryness and frizz. As an ultra-moisturizing oil, it will nourish, add shine and improve the texture of your strands since it’s a thicker texture. Extra virgin olive oil is the best oil you can use since it is the most natural olive oil in the market.
For thinning hair, a mixture of Almond Oil and Castor Oil aids in adding shine, thickness and strengthening hair. Since castor oil has a thick and goopy texture, it’s recommended to use it mixed with almond oil to help it easily spread onto hair. Essentially hair thinning leads to hair loss, castor oil is filled with vitamin E and proteins to help thicken and strength hair stands.
