Fatima Surayya Bajia: A Legend in Her Lifetime

Living a life of simplicity and humbleness even though she is amongst the most highly acclaimed personalities in Pakistan, one cant help but want to know more about Fatima Surayya Bajia in order to discover who she was, where she was from and what she did.

Fame that comes a result of hard-work and creativity must always be appreciated. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to briefly highlight a few points with regards to Fatima’s life, work as well as her achievements.

Brief family history:

She had nine other siblings, some of whom have also been blessed with fame and talent such as the famous cooking expert Zubeida Tariq, the playwright/ actor/  host Anwar maqsood, Designer Sughra Kazmi and poetess Zehra Nigah.

Fatima’s family was  very well-off, however, she and her siblings were taught to be hardworking and self reliant from a very young age. They did not receive education in any formal institute as children, rather they had teachers at home who took them through all the subjects that were taught in schools at that time.

After the partition, many people including Fatima and her family moved to Pakistan and settled in the new land.

Start of Career

Fatima got her break as an actress in a play that aired on PTV-Islamabad in 1966. From then on, she began writing and that lead to more than 10 successful plays, dramas and serials. Her most popular dramas include Aroosa, Zenat, Shama, Afshan etc. These classical dramas were aired on PTV and acted out by some of the best performers in the industry such as Tahira Wasti, Mishi Khan, Qazi Wajid and so many more.

To this day, her work is appreciated and praised as some of the finest form of entertainment that was created for Pakistanis despite stringent policies and bans imposed by the regime of the time.

The impact of Fatima’s dramas was such that families across Pakistan used to complete all their chores and duties quickly in order to be free at the time these dramas came on air. Quality family entertainment was therefore the hallmark of Fatima’s and that is what made her so famous and a darling of the nation.

After years of work, Fatima is no longer writing now. However, a biography about her entitled, Apki Bajia, was written  by Syeda Iffat Hasan Rizvi and published in 2012. This book gives an in depth look at Fatima Suraya Bajia s life, work and other events relating to her.


Fatima Surayya Bajia has won numerous awards in recognition of her services to the nation such as the Pride of performance Award, the Hilal-i-Imtiaz award as well asJapan’s highest civil award. All these accolades were rightly conferred upon her because of the sheer brilliance of her work and the effort she used in creating refined pieces of scripts and writings.

However, the impact of her work in the lives of many people is the biggest achievement of all since it is not easy to gain and maintain the kind of respect and love which Pakistanis bestow on their beloved Bajia.
