Mascara Wars- Battle of the Best

Posted on by

Not all of us natural beauties are born with gorgeous long and curled lashes, some of us spend countless amounts of money finding the ideal mascara to help us achieve those desired long-flirty lashes. You shouldn’t have to spend thousands of rupees on mascaras, especially considering that you should throw away your mascara after every 3-6 months since bacteria can develop.

Being a makeup addict, I’ve had my fair share of makeup fiascos especially with my lashes. Let me tell you guys a bit about my lashes- they aren’t too short or too long, stick straight down and very difficult to curl. For my lashes, the consistency of a mascara can not be too wet; a wet formula weighs down eyelashes and will not hold a curl up. Consider the example of using a wet hair gel after curling you hair; the wet consistency will cause the curl to straighten. Those who have eyelashes that grow straight down, avoid a mascara that is too wet. Instead choose one that’s thicker and dries quickly.

A mascara’s formula matters more than the brush. The best way to judge a mascara is by testing it on your hand. Simply swipe a bit of the mascara on your hand and see if it’s too dry or too wet- a wet mascara will take longer to dry.

With so many types of mascaras to choose from- you can take your pick from waterproof, volumizing, lengthening and curling. Mascaras are all formulated differently- giving you diverse results depending on your lashes. Eye lashes that are naturally curled will benefit from volumizing formulas while straight eye lashes can use a pick-me-up from curling and lengthening mascaras.

Now let’s talk about some top mascaras in the market. Brands such as Rimmel, Maybelline and Catrice are easily available across stores in Pakistan. Rimmel and Maybelline are 2 of the best makeup brands that formulate a variety of mascaras to suit your particular needs along with a reasonable price tag.

Rimmel Scandeleyes hit stores last summer and has been one of the best selling mascara in Pakistan. The bright orange packaging is very eye-catching- let alone the gigantic mascara brush. The Scandeleyes Mascara promises a thickening formula ideal for creating lush-full lashes. The issue with the wand is that it’s difficult to work with on smaller eyes; the size of the brush hits the upper lash line causing it to smudge and smear during application. The formula is similar to the Maybelline The Falsies Mascara; it’s quite wet and doesn’t hold up a curl easily. However the wet formula can work in your favor if you love to build up your mascara with several coats without clumping.

Maybelline’s The Falsies Volume Express Mascara has a thick, curved wand ideal for creating a natural curl. The fanned out brush reaches even the tiniest lashes, even on the lower lash line. The Falsies is perfect for creating length and a nice curl. The brush is ideal for small eyes; the formula works well to create length and volume along with a slight curl. Using this mascara at first tends to be on the wet side, but after using it for a month the formula gets thicker and easier to work with.

The Catrice Maximum Resist Volume Mascara is the one formula that I found to be extremely easily to work with. The formula is not too dry or too wet, it’s perfect for building up volume for your lashes while you need just a single swipe to achieve voluminous lashes. The mascara keeps your eyelashes curled all day without them sticking or bunching together. However, you can easily go overboard with too much mascara on your lashes with this one.
