Zinda Bhag became the first Pakistani movie to be submitted for Oscar consideration in over fifty years last week when Pakistani Academy Selection Committee selected the film to be submitted to Foreign Language Film Award category for 86th Academy Awards to be held in 2014. A total of four Pakistani films were submitted to the same category this year by Pakistani Academy Selection Committee. Other films submitted were Chambeli, Lamha, and Josh.
The movies for Oscar submission were selected by secret ballot, which favored Zinda Bhag over other films by heavy vote. Committee member Mehreen Jabbar said, “Zindaa Bhaag took a risk in telling a different kind of story and did it in a very innovative way. It also stayed true to its content and approach and that I feel is a very welcome contribution to the revival of cinema in Pakistan“.
Zinda Bhag is produced by Mazhar Zaidi and directed by Meeny Gaur and Farjad Nabi. The film talks about illegal immigration through the life of three young Pakistanis who want to leave their country to escape the realities of life using illegal means. The cast includes versatile actor Nasserudding Shah along with three new faces from Pakistan.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be holding its session in January, 2014 where it will decide best films from each category for Oscar nominees. The awards will take place in on 2nd March, 2014.
Zinda Bhag has given hope to Pakistani cinema. It has brought back the art of storytelling and breathing characters. Speaking about the selection of Zinda Bhaag, Chairperson of the Committee Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy said, “Pakistan will finally have a film in contention this year at the Academy Awards and I feel proud that today we are taking a small step towards recognizing our own filmmakers. Zinda Bhaag is proof of the fact that sheer will, passion and talent can achieve incredible feats, and I would like to congratulate the team behind the film on a compelling and cinematic film”
